PK Dick Award
The Philip K. Dick Award is presented annually with the support of the Philip K. Dick Trust for distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States. The award is sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and the Philip K. Dick Trust. The award ceremony is sponsored by the Northwest Science Fiction Society. The first award was given in 1983 to authors of works published in 1982.
Norwescon has had the honor of hosting the Philip K. Dick Awards since 1984. The Philip K. Dick Award and Special Citation are presented at an annual ceremony and dessert reception held each year on Friday night of the convention. (Typically at 7:00 p.m., in Grand Ballroom 2.) The 2010 nominated works are announced in January. Special guests attending the ceremony include the nominated authors and publishers as well as an administrator of the award. There is no charge for Norwescon members to attend the ceremony.
The 29th P.K. Dick Memorial Award Ceremony was presented Friday, April 22nd to a packed room of over 200 people. In addition, for the first time ever, the ceremony was streamed to an online audience of 184.
Nominated authors Alden Bell (The Reapers are the Angels) and James Knapp (State of Decay) read from their nominated books. Also, Nisi Shawl read from Elizabeth Bear’s Chill, Kristin Nelson read from Sara Creasy’s Song of Scarbaeus, Mary Robinette-Kowal read from Jon Armstrong’s Yarn, Nick Mamatas read from Project Itoh’s Harmony, and Lou Anders read from Mark Hodder’s The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack.
At the end of the reading, Administrator Gordon Van Gelder announced the Special Citation Award going to Harmony by Project Itoh, published by Haikasoru. The Strange Affair of Springheeled Jack by Mark Hooder, published by PYR won the 2010 Philip K. Dick Award.
